The monastery in Machern was first mentioned in a document dating from the year 1084. In 1238 it was a monastery for aristocratic ladies living by the rules of the Cistercian order.
The monastery existed up until 1802 but since then the buildings have no longer been used religuously.
The complex has been recently restored and attracts visitors from far and near.
